Ukraine and Iran deepen cooperation in agricultural sector

Ukraine and Iran have deepened cooperation in the agricultural sector. In order to establish the most favorable conditions for cooperation, a meeting of the Commission on Economic and Trade Cooperation will be held in Iran in late February, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

Prospects for supplying agricultural products on the Iranian market are extensive. Iran, a country with almost a double population of Ukraine, is one of the largest economies in the Islamic world (after Turkey). Therefore, Ukraine intends to continue effective cooperation with this country in terms of supplying grain, livestock products, foods and processing industry products.

In order to establish a strong and mutually beneficial relations, Mykola Prysyazhnyuk, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, and Masood Hagani Fard, Charge d'Affaires of the Islamic Republic Iran in Ukraine agreed to hold the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Iranian Joint Commission on Economic and Trade Cooperation in Iran on Feb. 25-26.

At this point, according to Prysyazhnyuk, possible exports might include grain - maize, wheat, barley. In addition, Ukraine intends to become for Iran a priority supplier of animal products: beef and chicken. The processing industry may also capitalize on increased cooperation with Iran. In particular, talks are about supplies of butter, milk powder, vegetable oil, sugar.

Ukraine and Iran intensified trade and economic relations last year. Ukraine supplied to Iran about 2 million tons of grain in 2013 and plans to do that on an annual basis. "I hope that a new stage of cooperation will be open and turnover between our countries, which today amounts to about 1 billion dollars, will grow by 2 to 3 times," said Akbar Ghasemi-Abadi, Iranian Ambassador to Ukraine.
