Yanukovych: People should have right to pray wherever they want

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych considers it necessary to improve legislation in the sphere of religion to give believers the right to pray wherever they wish, ForUm learned from the President’s press office.

"People should have the right to pray wherever they want," he stressed.

Head of State is convinced that the legislation should provide this opportunity for all the believers, regardless of their religion. "We need to soften the legislation and give the faithful an opportunity to pray wherever they wish to," Yanukovych said.

President assured that he treats all faiths with equal respect.

The President’s press office recalled that the current legislation provides for the need to have an official permission to hold church offices in any place but church.

As reported, the Culture Ministry addressed the Primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Archbishop of Kyiv and Galych Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), with the request to comply with the legislation on public worship and indicated that the priests should be have permission to conduct ministry in places such as the Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square in Kyiv.
