Ten killed in second blast in Volgograd

Ten killed in second blast in Volgograd

A fatal bomb explosion ripped apart a trolleybus in Russia’s southern city of Volgograd on Monday morning, in what the authorities say is the second terrorist attack in the city in the last two days, RiaNovosti informs.

At least 12 people were killed and 28 more were injured in the blast on the trolleybus, packed with morning commuters, at about 8:10 a.m. (04:10 GMT), the head of the regional Health Ministry said.

Some of the wounded, who officials said included a year-old child, are in serious condition, meaning the death toll may still rise.

Russia’s Investigative Committee Spokesman Vladimir Markin claimed the trolleybus explosion was a terrorist attack, making it the second such incident in Volgograd in less than 24 hours.

A bomb explosion at a railway station in Volgograd on Sunday afternoon, which authorities said was carried out by a suicide bomber, killed 17 people and injured over 40 others.

Monday’s bomb blast, if it is confirmed as a terrorist incident, would make it the third attack on the city in two months, and comes just weeks before Russia is due to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in February in the city of Sochi.

Investigative Committee spokesman Markin said that investigators are not ruling out that the back-to-back bombings may be linked.
