EBRD gives 300 million EUR for Ukrainian alternative energy development

EBRD gives 300 million EUR for Ukrainian alternative energy development

2012-2013, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided Ukraine about 100 million EUR under the Ukraine Sustainable Energy Lending Facility (USELF). Also, from 2007 to 2013 Ukraine received 220 million USD under the Ukraine Energy Efficiency Programme (UKEEP). The total volume of EBRD investment credits for development of Ukrainian alternative energy totaled 300 million Euros, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

Experts say that these funds will help create 15,000 jobs in the industry, as well as about 75,000 jobs in associated industries.

To date, the raised funds have gone to the development of renewable energy types such as bio power plants. Experts say creation of a new industry - bioenergy - entails revitalization of forestry and agricultural enterprises to ensure collection and processing of biofuels.

EBRD investment credits currently are funding construction of the first in Ukraine bio thermo power plant (BTPP) at Ivankovo village, Kyiv region. The project costs 25.9 million Euros, of which EBRD provided 15.5 million Euros, the rest were provided by the developer. The construction created 1,000 jobs. The BTPP equipment will be manufactured by Kharkov factory Energoatom. The design capacity of the new plant is 18 MW.

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov met with Suma Chakrabarti, EBRD President in early 2013. At the meeting, the Prime Minister said that our government was counting on the Bank’s continued financing of investment projects in Ukraine. Azarov also said that over the years in Ukraine, the EBRD had implemented nearly 300 investment projects for 7.5 billion Euros.
