FAO regional office may open in Ukraine

Ukraine's Minister of Agriculture and Food Mykola Prysiazhniuk, while staying in Berlin to attend the International Green Week 2012, has met Jose Graziano da Silva, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The sides discussed cooperation and joint action to combat hunger and poverty and ensure food safety and quality worldwide, the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food said in a statement, according to UKRINFORM.

"During the meeting with the FAO Director General, we have reached understanding. Ukraine supports all initiatives of this Organization to fight hunger, and will actively participate in the activities of the FAO. In particular, we will participate in a Budapest meeting , which will consider the strategy of the future of the FAO, and then in April in a meeting of the FAO in Azerbaijan," Prysiazhniuk underscored.

According to him, Ukraine is interested in expanding cooperation with the FAO. "That is why we strive to join the decision-making process and ensure proper representation of Ukraine in the FAO Secretariat. It is about increasing the number of its members up to 6 people. The opening of the FAO regional office in Ukraine will be also discussed," the minister informed.

He also noted that the Secretary-General promised to support the development and financing of measures to prevent spreading of African swine fever in the territory of Ukraine, because Ukraine is a natural barrier between Russia and the EU.

In addition, Jose Graziano da Silva promised to consider granting Ukraine the opportunity to be party to the execution of contracts for the provision of food in countries in need, Prysiazhniuk added.
