Ukrainian army to be smaller, but more effective, says Defense Ministry

The reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine should involve a personnel reduction on the one hand, and an increase in its combat strength on the other, according to Defense Minister Myklailo Yezhel.

The minister said that the reform of the Armed Forces would be conducted in three stages.

In 2010-2011, the situation in the army will be stabilized, its personnel reduced and its structure reformed. Besides, the Defense Ministry is planning to earn additional funds from raising the efficiency of its economic activities.

In 2012-2012, the Armed Forces' structure will be streamlined and the personnel cut will continue, and the more funds will be provided for the further reform of the army.

In 2014-2015, the structure of budgetary expenditures of the Defense Ministry will be changed and the army's combat capabilities increased.
