Yanukovych receiving congratulations from foreign leaders


President Obama called Viktor Yanukovych to congratulate him on his election and wish him success in carrying out his mandate, Party of Regions press office reported. The President commended the Ukrainian people on the conduct of their February 7 vote. This peaceful expression of the political will of Ukrainian voters is another positive step in strengthening democracy in Ukraine. They agreed on the importance of continuing cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation. They also wished each other’s athletes success in the Vancouver Olympic Games.

The strategic partnership between the United States and Ukraine is based on shared interests and values. These include expanding democracy and prosperity, protecting security and territorial integrity, strengthening the rule of law, promoting non-proliferation, and supporting reform in Ukraine’s economic and energy sectors. The United States looks forward to working with President-elect Yanukovych and continuing to strengthen our cooperation with Ukraine’s government and its Parliamentary leaders.

President of the Federal Republic of Germany Horst Köhler also sent his ongratulations to  President-elect of Ukraine and wished him “inspiration and as much success as possible n overcoming all challenges”.

In his turn, President of Poland Lech Kaczynski congratulated Viktor Yanukovych in the course of a telephone conversation and wished him success in developing the civil society and enhancing democratic values.

Viktor Yanukovych thanked President Kaczynski for the warm greetings and expressed hope that good neighbourly relations between Ukraine and Poland will develop dynamically on the basis of trust and mutual respect.

Even President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, ally of current President Yushchenko, congratulated Viktor Yanukovych during a telephone conversation.

“I believe in your success at the high post. The elections in Ukraine have been democratic and free. It has proved once again that Ukraine is moving along the way of strengthening democratic values and freedoms”, Mikheil Saakashvili noted.

Viktor Yanukovych thanked President of Georgia for his greetings and kind wishes. “People of Ukraine have great hope for the new power which would change their life for the better. I am assured that we will be able to justify them”, Viktor Yanukovych said.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in a letter of congratulation addressed to Yanukovych that during the presidential election campaign and the vote, the Ukrainian people had confirmed their commitment to democratic values. He emphasized "an urgent need for decisive action to tackle key economic and political reforms in Ukraine in the interests of securing an early recovery and long-term stability and prosperity." Barroso also said that "the European Union will stand by Ukraine in these endeavors." "We will continue to provide you with political, economic, financial and technical support," he wrote.

Barroso also said that the EU and Ukraine were fully devoted to their commitments to deepening the process of their political association and economic integration.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in his letter of congratulation that "the Ukrainian people has expressed its choice in the course of free, pluralist and democratic elections." "This is a victory for Ukrainian democracy and a model for the whole of the region. I'm pleased with the prospect of working with you," he said.
