NATO will support Ukrainian membership reforms

NATO will support Ukraine on the path of reforms required for its membership in the alliance.

NATO Spokesman James Appathurai made a statement to this effect in Brussels during a video conference with Moscow, National radio reported. He reminded of the Bucharest meeting communique noting that Ukraine and Georgia might become NATO members after they meet certain standards and express their will.

This position did not change, he said adding the relevant protocol was signed almost unanimously, although commonly NATO does not pass decisions too fast. Appathurai also informed that NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen was not planning to visit Ukraine soon. At the same time, he said the Alliance would continue to support its information office in Kyiv.

As reported, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, during his meeting with the NATO Secretary General in New York on September 23, invited the latter on a visit to Ukraine in the nearest future.
