Ukraine’s Security Service to declassify archive documents

By late 2009 Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) intends to declassify and publish all archive documents regarding crimes of Soviet totalitarian regime 1917-1991, Trend news reported.

“Since Jan. 21, 2009 Ukraine doesn’t keep and protect secrets of punitive-repressive system of Soviet Union,” Valentin Nalyvaychenko, acting chairman said at the briefing in Kyiv on Jan. 27.

This action means that the SBU as head state body ensuring protection of state secret removes stamp of secret from all criminal cases, documents, secret office work and other documents connected with Ukraine’s liberation movement, political repressions and starving in Ukraine.

The SBU archives comprise about 800,000 cases with stamp “secretly” and “top secretly” reflecting fates of million people, victims of totalitarian regime, Nalyvaychenko said.

In the nearest future national web-portal where all declassified cases to be placed will be created, head of SBU said.
