President Victor Yushchenko had a meeting with President Traian Basescu of Romania after which they held joint press conference, president's press office informed.
In his word President Yushchenko stressed that the events in Georgia of
last 12 days have damaged international relations and led to loss of
mutual confidence that many years had been forming in international
relations.
He also expressed opinion that energy security of the EU has been
put under question by the event and once again brought up a question of
energy supplies diversification.
"We must do all it takes to prevent this scenario from being
developed in cases with other frozen conflicts. We all must proclaim
that we would not accept military scenario of such conflicts'
resolution," said Victor Yushchenko, informing the media about joint
position of Presidents of Ukraine and Romania that has been agreed upon
by them during the talks.
Also President Yushchenko pointed to the need to improve
configuration of peacekeeping forces in Georgia. "The peacekeeping
formula that had been working before has proven its ineffectiveness,"
he said.
Traian Basescu from his part affirmed the position and added that
other frozen conflicts require improvement of peacekeeping mechanisms
too. "There is a risk that sooner or later these mechanisms transform
into regional conflicts. Therefore I will support EU's position to
search for new mechanisms of frozen conflicts settlement," he said.
Speaking about Ukraine's aspiration to join NATO President
Yushchenko repeated that events in Georgia proven importance of
integration to collective security system.
He said that by gaining NATO MAP and later joining NATO, Ukraine
would receive guarantees of its sovereignty from the international
community.
President Basescu from his part said: "Romania's position on granting
MAP to Ukraine and Georgia is the same as NATO had put it at Bucharest
Summit and at Foreign Minister's meeting: both countries have to be
accepted to the mechanism of joining NATO when they are ready to that."
