Scheffer: Russia will not spoil relations of Ukraine and NATO

Opinion of Russia will not influence on Ukraine’s joining the NATO Membership Action Plan, Secretary General of the Alliance Jaap de Hoop Scheffer stated in Vilnius after the meeting with the Ukrainian Defense Minister Yuriy Ekhanurov.

According to him, the summit of the NATO in Bucharest will be a good occasion for reconsideration of relations of Ukraine and the Alliance.

According to Scheffer, the meeting in Vilnius was informal that’s why there were taken no resolutions, but at the same time, countries-members of the Alliance would hold a discussion so that to come to single position concerning Ukraine’s joining the NATO Membership Action Plan.

The Secretary General of the Alliance has emphasized that the opinion of Russia will not influence on this decision.

“The NATO takes a decision. And these decisions are taken by members of the Alliance. And full stop,” he said.
