Ukraine is advised to reconsider election system

Ukraine should reconsider its elections system in order to represent interests of regions more widely. Chairman of Venice commission Jan Helgesen opined yesterday in Kyiv during international conference.

According to Jan Helgesen, proportional election system which is currently functioning in Ukraine has plenty of shortcomings. People who vote for this or that political force do not know politicians who will really represent interests of their region in the parliament.

“It is necessary to give more priorities to regions in order politicians to be more responsible for their promises,” he said.

Helgesen also noted the necessity to adopt election code in the VRU soon that will help to avoid conflicts during next elections.
