President meets Polish leader


Victor Yushchenko and Lech Kaczynski of Polandhave met in Warsaw to sign a Joint Statement on the 60th Anniversary of Operation Wisla and an Agreement for Ukrainian-Polish Cooperation in 2007-2008, president's press office informs.

The Operation Wisla statement was signed “with the aim of furthering bilateral cooperation, in the spirit of strategic partnership and as a continuation of the reconciliation between the two nations.”

“Unfortunately, our countries havesuch sad events as Operation Wisla. However, my visit today shows that Poland's presidentand I share the formula of historic reconciliation, which is important to both nations,” he said, thanking Poland and its people for the opportunity to honor those tragic events of the 1940s.

Yushchenko describedUkraine and Polandas "strategic political partners." “Not only do we respect and look into our past but we also care about our strategic future,” he said.

He said the 'road map' agreement contained lots of projects whose implementation would help develop Ukraine’s ties with Poland, Euro 2012 being high on the bilateral agenda.

Kaczynski said Ukraine and Poland showed how “two friendly European states should cooperate, even though one of them is in the EU and the other is not.”

“However, I would like to stress that we spare no effort to ensureUkraine becomes an EU member as soon as possible,” he said, addingthat the signed cooperation agreement was aimed at developing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the energy sector.
