Ukraine does not recognize elections in Abkhazia

Ukraine considers results of elections to People’s assembly of Abkhazia, which took place March 4, 2007, illegal and does not recognize them. Spokesman of Foreign Ministry of Ukraine Andriy Deshchitsa told Tuesday at a briefing.

“Ukraine considers the election illegal, and our country joins statements of the EU and OSCE on this issue,” he said.

According to Deshchitsa, the elections are illegal as considerable part of the nation could not take part in the elections. “Many citizens left the country yet in 1993, at times of armed conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia,” he noted.

At the same time the spokesman underlined that Ukraine was ready to take part in settlement of the conflict in Abkhazia under mandate of the United Nations.
