Party of Regions not to abandon “language promise”

Party of Regions does not intend to abandon its promise to give the Russian language the status of the second state language of Ukraine. PR deputy Victor Tyhonov told Monday.

“Party of Regions will defend this thesis, as it was included into the program of the party and its election pledges. I hope we will put it into practice. The most right way is to introduce changes to the Constitution. We are studying this question,” he said.

“History shows that Ukraine has two equal languages. That is why it must be registered at state level. It would be flawless,” Tyhonov added.

At the same time, pro-presidential Our Ukraine considers this statement “yapping”. “I have been in the parliament for 17 years, and such yapping has been lasted for 15 years. As soon as economic situation sharpens, language talks arise. It is unreal that Russian will become the second state language,” OU deputy Les’ Tanyuk stated.
