Ukraine’s President meets Turkmen leader

Victor Yushchenko has met with Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov in Ashgabat, President press office informed.

He congratulated the leader on being inaugurated today.

Mr. Yushchenko and Mr. Berdymuhammedov spoke about how to develop Ukraine’s ties with Turkmenistan, particularly in the energy sector and education. They agreed to formulate a 2007-2009 cooperation plan. The Ukrainian leader said Turkmenistan was Ukraine’s strategic gas provider.

They also discussed the implementation of Ukrainian investment projects in Turkmenistan.

Mr. Yushchenko invited the newly elected leader to visit Ukraine. Mr. Berdymuhammedov accepted his invitation.
