Ukraine can become mentally ill nation

The Ukrainian nation can become a mentally ill by 2010. Roman Semeshko the author of monitoring “Rights and legal interests of people with problems of mind and health: international standards and Ukrainian legislation” told.

He noted that by 2010 mental illness quantitatively will be on the second place after heart and vessels diseases.

According to Semeshko, such situation is getting worse due improper provision of treatment of mentally diseased persons. The law of Ukraine “On psychiatric service” is imperfect, the articles of which are mostly formal. “The State guaranties rights to mentally diseased persons only theoretically, in the law,” Roman Semeshko considers.

On the basis of experts results, about 70% of pre school children suffer from mental disorder, beginning from neurosis up to more serious diseases.

“The situation is complicated by the fact that diagnostics of pre school children is carried out only by parents agreement that does not allow to discover such illnesses at early stage,” Semeshko noted.

According to the expert, the Ukrainian legislation does not respond international standards. People have no possibility to get to know the character of treatment and medicine they are treated; the conditions of hospitals for mentally diseased persons are also improper.

According to official data, there are 1.200 million citizens suffering from mental diseases in Ukraine. Number of such people according to informal statistics is much bigger.
