Ukraine's President to challenge Cabinet law

Ukraine's President to challenge Cabinet law

During his visit to Zakarpatya region Victor Yushchenko said in Mukachevo he will challenge Friday’s Cabinet law at the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, president's press office reported.

“The most effective way of renewing the balance of powers is to send a request to the Constitutional Court to analyze some clauses of the Cabinet Law that conflict with the Constitution,” he said.

The President said the “destructive vote” to override his veto “ruined the last chance to preserve balances in the President’s relations with the government and parliament.”

“Unfortunately, it was the government’s unilateral initiative, in fact, the Prime Minister’s initiative.”

Yushchenko said the vote made him pessimistic about how to observe the National Unity Pact, particularly its clause on the Cabinet law. He reiterated his intention to amend the Constitution to balance Ukraine’s system of government.
