President Victor Yushchenko, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Oleksandr Moroz and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych have discussed an agenda for 2007.
The President told reporters after the meeting “their consultation was aimed at formulating a strategy for 2007, an action plan of political, social and economic initiatives.” They agreed to form a group involving representatives of the Secretariat, the Verkhovna Rada and the government to prepare this plan.
Yushchenko insisted that they must first of all convene the Constitutional Commission to amend the country’s supreme law.
“We did not discuss the essence of those proposals but spoke about how to harmonize our outlooks on constitutional changes and how to compromise,” he said. “If we want to perfect the system of government, we must speak about changes to the Constitution.”
The leaders also discussed ways to hold a new round of the National Roundtable involving representatives of the country’s major political forces, journalists, public leaders and artists.
“The key priority on the agenda for the Roundtable, which we are going to hold on February 14-15, is to formulate a ‘road map’ for 2007 and make it consistent with the National Unity Pact, which we signed last year,” he said.
Yushchenko, Moroz and Yanukovych also spoke about how to revise the cabinet law.
“In the [National Unity] Pact, we agreed to work on the bill together, formulate a common position, which the President will later sign,” he said, reiterating his reluctance to signthe recently adopted law.
They considered the land issue and agreed to work out an action plan to resolve it this year.
Speaking about Ukraine’s relations with other countries, the leaders discussed ways to formulate an action plan with Russia to develop our relations in 2007-2008. The President said the draft plan contained 22 points on trade, political, social and humanitarian cooperation.
Yushchenko suggested passing changes to this year’s budget to raise the minimum wage and pension and adopting a few important economic laws. They also addressed the issueof Ukraine’s WTO accession.
Summing up results of the meeting, Yushchenko said “Ukraine’s politics should be harmonious in 2007 and branches of government ensure stability and send positive signals to our society,” “President press office” informs.
