President of Ukraine urges MPs to compromise

Victor Yushchenko told journalists in Kyiv Thursday that he wanted parliamentary parties to resolve the current Verkhovna Rada crisis by finding healthy compromises, the president press service informed.

“I call on all of them to negotiate. As President of Ukraine, I promise to help settle this confrontation constitutionally,” he said, asking the deputies “not to oppose Ukraine.”

“We now have a perfect chance to understand that democracy benefits us all, both those who won and lost. But democracy can only function when rules and laws are respected and observed. Unfortunately, Ukrainian parliament has stumbled over that,” he remarked.

The Head of State said members of parliament focused on unimportant issues.

“I am upset to watch them share posts for weeks, forgetting the 48-million-people nation,” he said, adding that “the best way to resolve the problem is to have goodwill to compromise and discard the language of ultimatums.”

“We all want our parliament to be an effective and well-structured national institution, for it is colossally difficult for the country to work with no government and constitutional court,” he said.

The Head of State characterized this parliamentary crisis as one of the stages of building democracy in Ukraine.

“We all see our politicians pass a test. We will certainly have a structured parliament and a majority that will vote for speaker and premier,” he said with hope.

Then President Yushchenko reiterated that speaker and premier should be appointed in accordance with the law to never question their legitimacy. He also said parliamentary committees should be distributed fairly.
