Luhansk regional council gave the status of regional language to Russian


Deputies of Luhansk regional council unanimously decided to give the status of regional language to Russian in the Luhansk region. Such decision was made during today’s session of the council.

By this decision, deputies of Luhansk regional council also proposed the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to take action on realization of European Charter of regional languages and national minorities.

Deputies charged commissions on deputies’ activity, on legality and information, on education, culture, youth and sport with a job of analyzing conditions of use of the Russian language on the territory of the region till August 2006; and on basis of examination of language situation to work out a program of development of the Ukrainian and Russian languages in Luhansk region and to submit this program for consideration of the regional council.
