President Yushchenko opened a folk art exhibition

President Victor Yushchenko opened a folk art exhibition in the Decorative Art Museum at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra yesterday, January 19, presidential press office reported.

Its visitors can enjoy almost three hundred art pieces, made of clay, wood and fabric, from private collections of Petro Korpanyuk (Kyiv), Ivan Vyshyvanyuk (Kolomyya) and Borys Mardarevych (Snyatyn).

Museum Director Adriana Vyalets said today’s exhibition continued the Museums and Collectors Project, which is intent to involve professionals and ordinary people in studying the Ukrainian culture.

Following his Epiphany greetings, Yushchenko noted that private collectors “are doing a colossal job for Ukraine” by helping Ukrainians appreciate cultural gains of their ancestors.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to those who collected these things,” he said and added that the preservation of cultural heritage was one of the priorities of government.

Ms. Vyalets presented the Head of State with a calendar illustrated by artist Kateryna Bilokur.

Culture Minister Ihor Likhovy attended the opening ceremony.

The Korpanyuk collection consists of unique carved and woven pieces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries from the Ivano-Frankivsk region. It includes rare pieces of folk furniture, particularly more than forty boxes and tables. Korpanyuk also exhibited his collection of antique postcards.

Vyshyvanyuk and Mardarevych displayed their great collections of Pokuttya ceramics, painted crockery of the 19th century and painted tiles of the late 18th and early 20th centuries.
