Regarding article about adoptionsDear editor,
Please take note of the corrections to the facts posted by users concerning the article about adoptions of Ukrainian children by Americans. Peggy Sue Hilt (not Hill) did NOT kill her Ukrainian child: July 2, 2005 - Nina Hilt: age 2, of Wake Forest, North Carolina died after suffering several blows to her abdomen. Her adoptive mother, Peggy Hilt, In March 2006, Hilt plead guilty to second degree murder to avoid a charge of first degree murder. She said that she was frustrated due to the lack of bonding between Nina and herself. Hilt's lawyer said that she was an alcoholic and suffered from mental problems. May 25, 2006, Peggy Hilt was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of her daughter. Nina was adopted in 2003.

Also, concerning the POSSIBLE molestation of the Ukrainian children by their adoptive father - nothing has been proven in a court of law, and by American law that means the man is innocent until convicted by a jury of his peers. http://www.eyeoutforyou.com/news/local/2632366.html
Nina Karpachova has made it clear that she has no interest in the truth and continues to slander American families and hold on to the disproven "urban legands" about the fate of children adopted abroad. Please make these corrections to your story and inform your source of these corrections as well. Melissa Hemmen.

Every adoption case that goes wrong is a tragedy. But let's keep this in proportion. I don't know how many Ukrainian children have been adopted into the US in the last 20 years, but it must be of the order of thousands per year. If the ombudsman is aware of only two cases during that time, one of them unproved and dating back to the 1980s, I'd say that shows a far lower rate of child murder and molestation than the average in US or Ukraine, suggesting that US adoptive parents actually have a very good track record. Given the propensity for unadopted orphans to become drug addicts, alcoholics and prostitutes, their chances of falling victim to a fatal assault or sexual abuse seem to be far higher if they remain unadopted than if they are adopted into the US.

Question to Peter Crosby: Do you have evidence or knowledge of Ukrainian Orphanages deliberately engaged in genocide, murder or execution of children? Yes or No. It is not a difficult question. If yes then were is this evidence if no then stop referring to Ukrainian Orphanages as Death Camps for Children. You are making false, reckless unsubstantiated claims that are an insult to Ukraine and those that were victims of real Death Camps. FYI *** DEATH CAMP (Definition - http://dictionary.laborlawtalk.com/Death_camp) "A death camp is a concentration camp which has been deliberately set up in order to kill those imprisoned there; such camps are not intended as punishment for criminal actions, rather, they are intended to facilitate genocide. *** We all know that Ukrainian Orphanages are under resourced BUT THEY ARE NOT DEATH FOR CHILDREN ARE THEY? BE HONEST!!

Ukraine2006, you are overreacting. If you read carefully you will see that Peter's comment is actually very balanced and there is no word about death camps. The problem that he describes is not in the orphages itself but the fact that kids, who grew up in an orphanage environment, usually are not well prepared for a life on their own when they have to leave the orphage at the age of 16 or 18. This is not specific to Ukraine, but can be observed in every country. I know it e.g. from Bulgaria that is on its way to EU accession. The poorer the country to bigger this problem. The existence of this problem has been in fact acknowledge from the Ministery for Youth and Sport, hence their new program to increase support for foster families within the country, so that domestic adoption will become more popular. The website of the ministry provides a lot of detailed information.

It is quite regrettable that Mrs Karpachyova is trying to put a halt on international adoption now. While she was working as ombudsman for human rights for years and her close friend Mrs Chernyshova was heading the NAC (NAtional Adoption Center) she had no problems with it, surely because her colleague was taking the benefits. Now President Yuschenko and Minister Pavlenko have initiated a reform of international adoption, dismissed all employees of the former NAC and created a new office, the SDA (State Department of Adoption), with a new director that is not tainted with corruption, Mrs Karpachyova is trying to stain international adoption? How strange...

Editors: could you please erase the posts by Ukraine2006 as they are not concerning this subject? In fact this is an interesting topic in itself and deserves to be treated as such. THanks
Jeff Mowatt (15:12 | 02 October,2006)
Deborah, i agree they do not concern this topic and are not helping but to erase them will only raise more howls of protests about censorship and clearly, the site is unable to prevent continous re-registration.
I'd suggest they were regarded as background noise, as you don't need to respond to them, as these post are in themselves aimed at stifling the free speech of others by endless attrition. Meanwhile I will message you to explain what is going on in the background which will ultimately end the abuse, permanently

We adopted our son from Cherkassy baby house in Feb. 2005. The orphanage workers were caring, professional women who were doing their best with the resources they had. The facility was clean, neat, and in the midst of renovation.
Our son is healthy, smart, and beautiful. We are forever blessed to have him and forever grateful to Ukraine for allowing us the privilege of adopting him. Please, please allow others to adopt Ukrainian children if their own families cannot care for them. Give these children a chance!

Patti-- you cannot expect ukraine2006 to understand the sincerity of people around the world wanting to adopt these children... His only concern to is to create dissension with his false accusations and his support for failure rather than success... PC is right there are thousands of examples of successful adoptions and you are one!!! We all thank you!!!

There is a real problem with adoptions by Americans of Ukrainians, that the murderer Peggy Hilt, kind of points out...and it doesn't have to end in that kind of tragedy, to be super bad for the child.
The problem is adoptive parents, often are adopting because they have no children. And because this child isn't THEIR child, so to speak, they don't have the bonding they expect.
This is actually quite a common problem, and an absolute tragedy to speak. These parents have dreams of a perfect world, and don't understand that adoptive children have special needs, sometimes for years, before behavioral problems will eventually settle. Adoptive conditions are often harsh, and normal bonding, is difficult for a while...and these parents are so inexperienced (and largely selfish people)...
no its a real problem, american to american adoptions too. But, thats not to say these kids don't need homes....they do, just good ones.
